When dealing with water damage in your home, it can be stressful and devastating, whether it’s isolated to one area or throughout your entire home. Understanding the different water categories can help determine the level of risk and appropriate remediation steps.

Contaminated water can stem from a variety of sources, such as garden runoff, sewage, and wastewater. Once water is contaminated, it can quickly spread harmful bacteria and viruses, posing serious health and property risks.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) categorises contaminated water into three main categories.

  1. Category 1 (Clean Water)
    • Originates from a clean source with minimal risk of causing illness such as leaking taps and toilet tanks.
    • Comes in contact with relatively clean surfaces and has not been stagnant for more than 72 hours (Approximately 3 days)
    • If left untreated can lead to mould growth within 24 -48 hours, potentially damaging your home’s structure, your health and your personal belongings

  1. Category 2 (Grey water)
    • Contains moderate levels of chemical or biological contaminants. Has not come into contact with fecal matter but may contain other contaminants that can cause illness if ingested.
    • Arises from sources like dishwashers, washing machines, showers, and sinks.
    • Has been present in the structure for an additional 48 hours.

  1. Category 3 (Black Water)
    • Considered highly unsanitary and contaminated, it’s a breeding ground for bacteria, pathogens, harmful chemicals, and disease-causing organisms.
    • Includes water in contact with sewage or natural disasters such as floods.
    • Any water originating from sea water, ground or surface water, rising rivers and streams is considered category 3
    • Items damaged by category 3 water, such as couches, rugs, and gib walls are deemed unsalvageable and must be disposed of.
    • Has been stagnant in the structure for more than 120 hours (5 days or more)
